There’s an old childhood saying that said “if you don’t have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all.” But with social media trending in todays generation, people feel that everything is free speech. Since we don’t have to physically see them say it to our faces, people are all the more braver to type it out on a keyboard and post it for everyone to see.
There are alter egos and catfishes that are out there as well. As an online presence, anyone can make up a fake life. Post a few pictures you find on Google or steal from other people on social media, write a few lines on a post and wa-la!… a brand new identity.
You may have stumbled upon people who are way too open and over share everything. They post daily selfies with the same filters, write long posts on Facebook ranting about subjects ranging from A to Z or repost everything that they find funny. Although they seem open, these people are too hiding behind a screen instead of living their life in real time.
Internet trolls, cyber jokesters, overly-concerned social media presences… it’s all the same and hurtful. But we are all to blame. As we scroll through Instagram or Facebook sometimes we feel the need to comment on everything or correct every little detail we see, whether it is a grammar mistake or information that we believe is false. We comment back and feel the need to teach that person a lesson. This can be hurtful or embarrassing. Check your facts and if you still feel the need to say something, there is such a thing called a DM or a PM and we can message that person individually and advise them about their mistake.
Instead of taking offense to every little tweet, comment or post on social media, head over to your settings and remove the page or the person from your feed. No attention at all is better than negative attention.
